The International Fund for Animal Welfare’s Marine Mammal Rescue and Research team responds annually to hundreds of calls reporting stranded or distressed marine mammals spotted along the Cape Cod coastline.
When determined necessary, the team provides supportive care and medical treatment. Their work also includes data collection and analysis to assist in public outreach and education efforts.
IFAW’s team members and dedicated volunteers are on stand-by 24/7 and, in 2010, esponded to 807 reports of stranded marine mammals. The team dealt with twelve mass strandings in 2010 involving a total of 61 dolphins.
Working with NOAA, IFAW is developing a potentially ground-breaking satellite tagging and post-release monitoring program to further improve outcomes of such situations.
GreaterGood.org supports their efforts through the Gifts That Give More [tm] program and other donations.
