Supreme Court declines to save Chevron from fines

A $19 billion judgment by an Ecuadorean court against Chevron can be collected. In early 2011, after an eight years of litigation, Ecuador found that the oil company Texaco deliberately dumped more than 16 billion gallons of oily toxic waste into the Amazon between 1964 and 1992.

Since Chevron purchased Texaco in 2001, the Ecuadorian government held the company liable in this case.

This year, Chevron asked the Supreme Court to reverse a decision made in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals to allow enforcement of the Ecudorean judgement.  The Supreme Court today declined to review the decision, making it possible for the litigants to go forward in collecting the judgement owed.
