Containing over one-sixth of the world's population, China is one of the worst offenders when it comes to global warming and pollution. Cities are plagued by air thick with smog, once-thriving ponds are dried up, and power plants seem to be springing up around China like weeds. China's a strong contender in the world's technology race, which is also what makes it an equally-strong contender on the world's infamous list of polluter countries.
Because China uses more energy than almost any other nation, it needs to be a leader in developing alternative energy sources and reducing human effect on global warming. Under the UN Global Compact, of which China is a member, countries must work toward responsible and sustainable energy goals. Hold China to the promise it made by entering the UN Global Compact. Dear Mr. Chen Jiagui, Member of China National People's Congress Standing Committee:
I am writing to you today to voice my concern over China's contribution to global warming. With over a billion people, China is one of the highest energy-using countries in the world, and consumes more coal than any other country. Coal emissions are rapidly contributing to the glacier meltdown — a process that could eventually destroy the Earth, making it virtually uninhabitable for all living creatures as we know it.
I've seen more and more reports about the thick smog that hangs over some cities, and about some poor towns that have lost all access to clean, potable water. Because China is such a leader in technology advancement, it also needs to lead the way with developing green alternatives to fossil fuels and ways to combat its tremendous impact on the health of our environment.
I'm urging you to take responsibility for China's carbon footprint and commandeer the efforts to cultivate a greener, cleaner nation — for the sake of all of us.
