Goal: 25,000 Progress: 11,040
Sponsored by: National Parks Conservation Association

The Trump administration is proposing a 13% cut to the National Park Service's budget, which would bring funding to its lowest levels since World War II. For years, the Park Service has struggled with underfunding even as visitation has increased. Over the last five years, the Park Service has lost 11% of its staff, while the backlog of repair needs at parks has grown to more than $11 billion.

The administration's budget, if enacted, would likely lead to closed campgrounds and ranger stations, reduced services, and so few rangers at the parks that you could be hard pressed to find one to help you with your visit. But Congress has the power to reject this proposal. That's why we need your help.

Please join NPCA in asking your members of Congress to reject the president's proposed budget and fund our national parks the way they need and deserve.

Dear Members of Congress,

The special places managed by the National Park Service are already underfunded, and the president's proposed budget for fiscal year 2018 would make matters much worse. I urge you not only to reject this damaging budget, but to support increased appropriations funding for the National Park Service next year.

The budget proposal would cut more than 1,200 park staff on top of current understaffing. It would very likely lead to closed visitor centers and campgrounds and other cutbacks in park services. It is a deeply damaging and unrealistic budget proposal for our national parks and should be rejected outright.

The unfortunate reality is that parks need more funding, not less. Over the last five years, the park system has lost 11% of its staff while at the same time struggling to support a 19% increase in visitation. While the remaining park staff struggle to accommodate record visitation, the backlog of overdue repair needs has grown to more than $11 billion.

These are America's treasures — places that protect our natural and historic heritage and tell America's story to millions of visitors each year. They generated nearly $35 billion in economic activity last year alone and supported 318,000 jobs. They need your help.

As the funding process moves forward for fiscal year 2018, I urge you to support a funding increase for the National Park Service. Thank you for your attention and consideration.

Sincerely,
