The Trump administration is ready to follow through with its plan to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency, but they seem to have completely forgotten how bad our country was before the EPA was started in the 70's.

Smog obscured city skylines, beaches were closed off to the public due to horribly unclean water, and factories pumped pollution into the air with no repercussion whatsoever. [1]

But now Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has introduced bill H.R. 861 which simply states "This bill terminates the Environmental Protection Agency on December 31, 2018." [2]

The bill says literally nothing else. It is one sentence in its entirety. There is no mention of what would happen to the 15,000 engineers, scientists, and researchers whose jobs would be lost, and nothing about what this would mean legally for the U.S.'s current alignment in the Paris Agreement. [3] What's even more disconcerting is that this bill isn't some outlier in current conservative policy. Republicans across the board have taken aim at the EPA, with President Donald Trump leading the charge to dismantle the Agency. Trump's pick to lead the EPA, Scott Pruitt, battled against the EPA's conservationist mission for years in his former role as the Attorney General of the State of Oklahoma.

If the EPA is abolished entirely, here are just a handful of things the American people would lose: knowledge of chemical spill areas and their cleanup [4], community based childhood asthma programs, indoor air quality tools for schools, pollution prevention, and clean water. [5]

These are just a tiny fraction of the things the EPA does to help keep American citizens safe and healthy from hazardous environmental issues. It is not simply an agency dedicated to stopping climate change, it was put in place to keep us all safe and make our country a better place to live.

If this agency is abolished, there will be serious repercussions for future Americans and President Trump doesn't seem to care in the slightest.

Dear Congressman Matt Gaetz,

Abolishing the Environmental Protection Agency is a massive mistake, and your citizens will pay for it dearly.

If you would put the American people before your anti-climate change agendas, you would maybe see how much of a benefit this agency has been to us for the last 47 years.

We don't want to be smothered by energy industry pollution again, we want to keep our clean water, we want the air in our children's schools to continue being safe, we want to keep localized programs that benefit our health, and we want our world to be livable for our children.

Not only would you be abolishing programs and protections that we all rely on, but you would be killing thousands of jobs in the process, even though you said you wanted to create more jobs.

The abolishing of the EPA will hurt your country so much more than you realize. Open your ears to the people around you and make a decision that helps your citizens, not hurts them.

Sincerely,

Petition Signatures
