Amazonian Basket with Huayruro Seeds

Item # 27548
No longer available

Each point of our shallow star-shaped basket is studded with brightly colored huayruro seeds, their glossy red and black surfaces adding sparkle to this unusual design. Grab a sturdy, eye-catching basket and fill with fruit, or display alone on a wall or table. Especially stunning in groups of two or three.

Made in one of the villages adjacent to the Reserva Comunal Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo, one of the largest communal reserves in South America, the baskets help provide those living in the forest with an alternative to slash-and-burn agriculture. The Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo is one of the most biologically diverse reserves in the world, and supports a record 14 species of primates.

The huayruro seed is grown for its ornamental value, and is used extensively in tribal ornaments and jewelry in Andean culture. Although poisonous if eaten, huayruro seeds are treasured for their naturally-occurring red and black coloring.

Baskets measure approximately 15" dia. (30 cm) and have a loop on the back for hanging. Choose a basket with bands of Gray, Raspberry or Black. Handmade in and fair-trade imported from Peru.
