Pay a Nurse Midwife's Salary for a Week
Help provide grassroots, on-the-ground healthcare in a remote, impoverished region of western Nepal.
Nurse midwives are at the heart of the public health response to maternal and infant mortality. They provide preventive medicine during pregnancies, ensure safe deliveries, identify danger signs for emergency referrals, and follow up on the care of mothers and newborns. Yet in far western Nepal, where a civil war and severe poverty has left the healthcare system in ruins, trained nurse midwives are unavailable for most citizens. As a result, only one in 100 deliveries is conducted by a trained healthcare provider. This lack is deadly: a woman in these areas has nearly a 3% chance of dying as a result of pregnancy-related complications.
Nyaya Health, a medical relief organization working in the far western district of Achham, is changing this dire scenario. Helping to pay the salary of one of Nyaya Health's nurse midwives will both save lives immediately and will help to build the long-term healthcare infrastructure that Achham so greatly needs.
This Gift That Gives More™ pays a nurse midwife in Nepal for one week.
Report from the Field
Nyaya Health recently celebrated the first anniversary of the Bayalpata Hospital in the Achham region of Nepal. With the help of the Nepali Ministry of Health and Population, this project offers the people of Achham a full outpatient department, delivery ward, 24-hour emergency care, family planning services, pharmacy, and lab.
Within a few months of opening, the hospital and its staff also proved crucial in fighting a severe severe diarrhea/cholera outbreak in the district.
In 2010, the hospital began providing such an additional services as an ambulance transportation and an x-ray machine (the area's first) to help with diagnosis.
Nyaya Health is a unique assembly of Nepal- and US-based public health experts and healthcare providers who use collective expertise to develop long-term, system-level improvements in healthcare delivery in impoverished areas of Nepal. The Nyaya Health clinic in Achham is run by an all-Nepali staff, and focuses on primary care, maternal and child health, HIV, and tuberculosis. Nyaya Health is expanding its network of mobile health workers to reach outlying areas. Its services have been developed in collaboration with the government of Nepal; the ultimate goal is full integration with public-sector health programs.
