Computers for Cambodian Children

Item # 28620

Help a Cambodian child break a life-long cycle of poverty with the most powerful tool in a modern education: a computer.

In the 21st century, the keys to a child's future may turn out to be keys on a computer. Basic computer literacy is becoming more and more important for children's futures, but at the same time, more and more children are being left behind.

In Cambodia's Siem Reap province, children whose families cannot afford the daily public school tuition of 300 Riel (approximately 7 cents U.S.) might never get a chance to attend school at all, much less the chance to ever touch a computer in real life.

The Volunteer Development Poverty Children's Association exists to help these underserved children create a brighter future for themselves through the power of education. VDPCA's school offers free classes to more than 600 children between the ages of five and 20, some of whom have lost one or more parents to HIV/AIDS.

VDPCA is hoping to purchase ten computers to create the school's very first computer lab. These are basic machines with keyboards that can accommodate both English and Khmer.

Your contribution of $36.50 through this Gift That Gives More™ funds 1/10th of a computer. Get your family, sports team, or office involved; it only takes ten donors to provide an entire computer. Combined with others' contributions, your donation makes a very real difference, giving hundreds of poor children in Siem Reap the chance to achieve a better future through this vital aspect of a modern education.

The Voluntary Development Children's School was established in 2005 by two Buddhist monks, Rathana Nn and Togh Main, who wanted to help some of Siem Reap's poorest children achieve a positive future through education. It achieved registered NGO status in 2007 under the name Volunteer Development Poverty Children Association. VDPCA offers free classes to more than 600 children, 60% of them girls, who are often left out of an education altogether. Helping a young girl get a school education is the best single path to poverty reduction in her community.
