Feed a Retired Lab Monkey for a Month
Help care for one of the 100+ monkeys who have found a new home, and a new life, at the Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary.
It's painful to imagine the experiences of monkeys used in clinical research studies. How much more painful it must be for the monkeys themselves, who find themselves shipped across continents, caged in sterile environments, denied the chance to socialize with others of their kind, and used in scientific experiments studying everything from cocaine to schizophrenia.
Monkeys rescued from laboratory studies cannot be turned loose, since they are not native to North America; nor can they be shipped back to the rainforest and released.
The luckiest retired research monkeys find a new life at Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary in Florida. At Jungle Friends, over 100 monkeys enjoy a safe, respectful, comfortable, and appropriate environment. They are free to eat, socialize, groom one another, swing in hammocks, and even create "monkey art" -- all supported by the tireless efforts of the volunteers.
Every year, more and more research monkeys are retired from universities and laboratories as alternative research methods are adopted. This is a welcome trend for the monkeys themselves, but sadly, it means more monkeys are now on Jungle Friends' waiting list than are currently being sheltered.
You can help. This Gift That Gives More™ provides one month of food for a rescued monkey, giving a new life to a creature that has experienced some of the very worst of humanity's cruelty.
Don Knotts (pictured above right) is a tufted capuchin, estimated to have been born in the late 1980s. Captured in the rainforest as a youngster, Don was exported to the U.S. and sold into research where he lived for nearly two decades. Fortunately, after the research program ended, Don and eight other tufted capuchins were retired to Jungle Friends. Don was socialized with Floyd, another monkey retired from the lab. The two spend lots of time together, grooming and playing. Don is very interested in his surroundings and loves to explore. Still, Don seems to prefer being in the background.
Mitzi (pictured below right) is a very lucky 4-year-old common marmoset who was bred for research and had been sent to a laboratory to be used in biomedical studies. A change of course allowed her a bright future at Jungle Friends instead. The trees and sunshine she finds in her new home could not be more different from the cage in which she spent the first few years of her life!
Mitzi spends a lot of her time running through her habitat visiting with the other marmosets, and is a champion eater. Jungle Friends is planning to pair Mitzi with Mojo Jojo, and is looking for sponsors to help ensure her a happier future.
