At the GreaterGood Network, we have worked for years with artisan families in Haiti. In the wake of this devastating earthquake, we extend our hope and sympathy to these families. We hope you will help us do even more to aid their recovery. Every purchase of a fair-trade item from Haiti donates extra to help Haitian artisans affected by the earthquake.

Thank you for building hope and helping to heal Haiti.

You may not like wild critters in your house, but this is one little reptile you're guaranteed to welcome! Our gorgeously hand-painted metal geckos hail from Haiti, where they are said to be good luck. You can also feel good knowing your purchase is eco-friendly, as these little guys are made from recycled steel drums.

In order to create these geckos, old steel drums are burned to remove their coating, sliced open, and flattened. The artists then sketch designs on them, and sculptors cut the desired shape and create depth by embossing areas with rounded hammer ends. A non-toxic, rust-preventative primer is applied, artisans paint on designs, then the final product is varnished.

These crafts are created by multinational group of young entrepreneurs. The company works to promote employment in Haiti by teaching unskilled workers trades. They also help independent artists find new markets. The company currently employs about 400 people, half men and half women.

  • Recycled steel
  • Hinged hook for hanging
  • 8" L x 5.5" W (20.3 x 14 cm)

May 27, 2013 - I ordered 2 Salsa (red) and would have ordered 2 Caribbean (blue) but they were out of stock. I love my little guys! I love the fact that they are from recycled material and feel good that I am helping Haitian artisans. My geckos are climbing up my front porch post and they are so colorful, you can see them from the street. Very satisfied and would definitely recommend.

May 3, 2013 - When my 'calypso' gecko arrived, I was just tickled! The colors are so vibrant and fun.. the picture here doesn't really do it justice! This little guy is the color inspiration for a lot of the rooms in my house- he's SO cute! I just wish they were available in a range of sizes.. I just adore him!

August 19, 2012 - Bought this for myself after admiring my sister's for a long time. It's adorable. The way the hook is configured makes the gecko stand out from the wall a bit, giving him a 3-D look that I love. The finish work isn't perfect, but it has a ton of Haitian character. I would get another for myself or a gift.

June 20, 2012 - One can never have too many lizards! I bought the Caribbean blue design. He has joined another Haitian lizard (from another Fair Trade retailer) in my kitchen. I have a third one in my family room (hanging with lizards from other cultures). I always come here to look for items to buy so I can support Haitian artisans.

Artisan Caribbean Craft

Known for its originality and ingenious use of recycled materials, Port-au-Prince - based Caribbean Craft has cultivated an enthusiastic international following with its jubilant folk art since 1990. Founded to address Haiti's high unemployment rate, it provides artisan training, design assistance, and export outlets for over 500 artisans. Along with fair wages, the network provides health and accident insurance, a pension system, and interest-free loans when needed. By earning a living through their unique creations, talented artisans find new empowerment and hope for the future.

Haiti has long been known for its vibrant tradition of colorful, inventive folk art, and there's no better example of inspired Haitian style than Caribbean Craft's oil drum art. Recycled steel drums are molded into ornate forms celebrating local folklore, voodoo, and other mystical and religious symbolism. Other recycled resources, such as empty cement bags, are used to created festive papier-mâché items such as ornaments, piggy banks, and serving trays.

Caribbean Craft's long-term goal is to continue as a conduit for the diversity and vision inherent in Haitian design while producing ecologically sustainable products.
