Protect American Wolves
Roll over image to zoom in
Help keep endangered wolves alive! Wolves were once common throughout North America, but were killed in most areas of the United States by the mid-1930s. Today, their range has been reduced to Canada and a few specific regions of the United States. In places like the Northern Rockies and the American Southwest, the most common cause of death for wolves is conflict with people over livestock losses. While wolf predation on livestock accounts for less than 1% of livestock losses each year, when wolves do prey on livestock it can mean certain death for a wolf -- or even an entire pack.
Defenders of Wildlife is leading critical on-the-ground efforts to reduce livestock losses, foster goodwill among the ranching community and save the lives of countless wild wolves. In cooperation with ranchers, biologists, and federal land managers, Defenders of Wildlife has developed several effective, life-saving strategies to prevent needless wolf deaths.
You can help.
- $16.00 funds two bales of hay, which provides food for livestock on an emergency basis and makes it possible to move them away from known wolf dens. By decreasing the contact between wolves and livestock, needless deaths are avoided.
- $30.00 helps fund the installation of Turbofladry, a simple red flag system which discourages wolves from crossing into livestock pastures.
- $40.00 helps fund a wolf telemetry receiver to prevent wolf/livestock interactions. With the use of the receiver, ranchers and herders can track the location of a wolf pack and avoid areas where conflicts are likely to occur.
- $68.00 helps fund a trained guard dog to help protect livestock. Guard dogs alert humans to the presence of predators in the area, and in some cases they help keep wolves away entirely.
Donate today and help the American wolf make a comeback. By building bridges with the ranching community, Defenders of Wildlife creates acceptance for this majestic species and in turn saves the lives of wild wolves across the country.
Report from the Field
Donations from people like you have gone a long way toward protecting wolves. Telemetry equipment has helped to pinpoint wolf locations so that shepherds and ranchers can keep their livestock away from those areas. New barriers known as "turbo-fladry" have been purchased as an effective deterrent for wolves, keeping livestock safe.
The program that compensates ranchers for livestock killed by wolves has now ended because federal legislation will provide funds in the future. But donations prior to that were able to reimburse two ranchers in Oregon, building an important bridge as wolf populations extend into that state.
Defenders of Wildlife is a national, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to the protection of all native animals and plants in their natural communities. Founded in 1947, they are one of the country's leaders in science-based, results-oriented wildlife conservation. They work to protect and restore America's native wildlife, safeguard habitat, resolve conflicts, work across international borders and educate and mobilize the public. They stand out in their commitment to saving imperiled wildlife and championing the Endangered Species Act, the landmark law that protects those animals.
