Protect Wild Areas of Australia

Item # 38357

Help protect the largest intact tropical savanna on earth in northern Australia, and protect some of the planet's threatened species who make it their home!

Covering more than 240 million acres, Northern Australia is one of the planet's last great wildernesses and boasts by far the largest and most intact tropical savanna remaining on earth. It often amazes people to learn that Northern Australia's natural richness is so great that it ranks alongside the Amazon rainforest and Antarctica's polar wilderness in terms of global significance.

Although there are small pockets of rainforest and wetlands, most of the region is blanketed by a tropical and sub-tropical savanna -- vast plains of tall, dense grasses and trees. In fact, Australia has more than 25% of the Earth's remaining intact savannas. No other country has more than 9%. A startling 70% of the world's tropical savanna has already been destroyed.

These tropical savannas are a top priority for The Nature Conservancy's Australia Program, which hopes to protect 1.75 million acres over the next two years.

Some of the threatened mammals of the area include many formerly abundant animals such as the Northern Quoll, Golden Bandicoot, the Rock Ringtail Possum and Bilby which are rapidly declining towards extinction.

Many bird species are also under threat, including the colorful Gouldian Finch, the Northern Masked Owl, the Red Goshawk, the Purple-crowned Fairy-wren, Australian Bustard, Merten's Water Monitor, Australian Painted Snipe, Squatter Pigeon and Spinifex Pigeon.

Many reptiles and amphibians could also be protected through further land acquisitions, including the threatened Pig-nosed Turtle, the iconic Freshwater Crocodile, the Giant Frog and the Bilingual Froglet.

The Nature Conservancy is working to urgently acquire and protect an area near the Fish River, in the Kimberley region. Almost 40% of mammal extinctions globally in the last 200 years have occurred in Australia. Help keep that number from rising any higher.

You can help. This Gift That Gives More™ preserves 5 acres (2 hectares) of tropical savanna in northern Australia. Plus, every dollar raised from the United States will be matched by The Pew Charitable Trusts on a dollar-for-dollar basis, doubling the impact you make!

The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
