Job Training for Homeless Veterans
Roll over image to zoom in
Many homeless veterans need a little extra help to get their lives back on track. As Veterans Village of San Diego so eloquently puts it: "A hand up, not a hand out."
You can make a difference by supporting programs that help veterans return to leading a normal life. Occupational therapy helps keep injuries such as the loss of a limb from preventing meaningful employment. Vocational training teaches new job skills and helps veterans apply skills they learned in the military to civilian life.
Vocational training can help veterans acquire skills in growing job areas such as in HVAC renovation, wind technology, green automotive technology, smart meter installation, or solar installation. Other programs help veterans get the training necessary to become licensed commercial truck drivers, vocational nurses, or to qualify for other licensed professions.
While in transitional housing provided by these programs, formerly homeless veterans can receive further help with job preparedness, dressing for success, resume writing, interview skills, job search skills, and budgeting for life outside transitional housing. If veterans suffer from physical disabilities, these programs also provide further occupational therapy to help veterans achieve full rehabilitation and community reintegration.
Across the United States, homeless veterans are trapped on the streets by lack of employment. With your help, they can once again be a productive part of the society that they served to protect.
Success Stories from Veterans Village of San Diego
At any one time, Veterans Village of San Diego has 100 to 300 veterans participating in their employment programs.
Steve served in the U.S. Navy as an Engineman. With help from Veterans Village of San Diego, he completed a ten week Certified Nurse Assistant course at Kaplan College, researched potential employers, fine tuned his resume, and sharpened his interview skills. In addition, he sought job leads from all potential resources to successfully transition into this new career field. His plans for the future include becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Dawn was 42-year-old army veteran who was homeless. Enrolled in Veteran Village of San Diego's Solutions For Change (a program that provides housing, food, and clothing), she also sought help in finding employment. Today, with VVSD assistance, she works as a security guard full time, and her employer reports that she is doing well in her position.
After completing a residential treatment program for substance abuse, Kevin enrolled in Veteran Village of San Diego's employment program. Formerly with the U.S. Navy as an Operation Specialist, Kevin attended Solar Training Institute and later volunteered to install solar panels on low-income housing as well as taking additional safety classes for contractors. Now working at a solar energy company in California installing panels, Kevin is studying for the National Certification in his field.
